Functional diagnostics and therapy

The harmonic liaison between your upper and your lower jaw provides a smooth chewing which is important for your personal well-being. A disorder of the jaw may cause teeth grinding, a compression of the jaw or a limited movability in the temporomandibular joint. This may finally result in e.g. headache or painful muscle tensions. In order to locate the cause of your discomfort, it is important to conduct a comprehensive function analysis of your jaw, and may be of your entire physical condition. Therefore we use a computerised system to sketch your temporomandibular joints under consideration of the masticatory muscles in accordance with the „DIR method“. We control the movement of your lower jaw and your head, check your joints for cracking noises or take dental impressions. After completion of this analysis, we will develop your personal therapy concept (e.g. basic grinding-in measures, a custom-built plastic splint or the reconstruction of destroyed hard tooth tissue.

DIR method

The harmonic cooperation of your lower and upper jaw ensures the smooth running of mastication and also your own physical well-being. Dysfunction in the jaw might cause pain in the adjacent regions (teeth, jaw, jaw muscles, temporomandibular joints, ear region, eye region, cervical or neck region, head and facial region, shoulders, back in the lumbar or pelvic area). This clinical picture often is made of a so-called craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD). The longer you already have already lived with it, the more peripheral (distant from the origin) the pains are.

The chronicity rate is about 70% within 3-5 years, which is very high. Jaw joints which do not lie in their central fossa and therefore are not aligned symmetrically are the main cause of CMD. The consequences are muscle tension and malfunction. The reasons for this are e.g. changes in the tooth position by tilting teeth because of tooth loss, consequences of tooth defects, loss of vertical dimension by loss of teeth, wisdom teeth, teeth grinding or pressing.

To understand your symptoms, an extensive functional analysis of your jaw and possibly the entire body structure is important. For this purpose, we use a computer-based recording of your jaw movements. As one of few methods, this dynamic intraoral registration (DIR method) takes the masticatory muscles in their function into account. The DIR method allows an objective insight into the various components of the masticatory system and enables the assessment of overall functional processes.

Using the DIR method, the temporomandibular joints can be brought back to their original physiological situation. Some examples of therapeutic treatment spectrum are: headaches caused by tension, migraines, neck, shoulder and back pain, tinnitus and dizziness.

Following up the analysis, we develop your personal treatment plan, eg. Simple occlusal, a custom-made plastic splint or the reconstruction of destroyed tooth structure.
